Captains leading way by example

The four captains of the Gahanna Lincoln High School boys lacrosse team have had opportunities to be vocal leaders.

After the Lions lost to Granville 9-2 on April 14 for their second consecutive loss by seven goals, coach Brett Dillon knew his disappointed team needed to go in a new direction mentally. Instead of having his captains step up vocally, Dillon stressed to Nate Hays, John Mercurio, Anders Nilsen and Steve Resch that it was more important that each be leaders by their actions.

"Not that we're not going to motivate them by words, but we need to lead more by example," Mercurio said. "As captains, we have to work hard. Coach Dillon told Nate to dodge past every defenseman, he told Steve Resch to pressure his offensive man, he told me to dodge. With every team, there's a lack of morale with some players, but we're trying to work that out."

Gahanna beat its first two opponents by a combined 29 goals. The Lions then struggled in a 13-6 loss to Westerville Central on April 9 before losing to a Granville team that Mercurio believes "just wanted it more."

There's been a big difference in practice for the Gahanna Lincoln High School boys lacrosse team.

With 23 returning players among a roster that has expanded from 28 to 50, the Lions haven't focused solely on drills. Instead, there have been plenty of opportunities to work on game situations.

Boys lacrosse Lions hiking the expectation level

By CHRIS MILES
Published: Monday, April 13, 2009 5:24 PM EDT
With nearly its entire lineup back from a year ago, the Gahanna Lincoln boys lacrosse team seems poised for a breakout season.

In just its third season as a varsity squad, 23 players return to a squad that was a respectable 9-10 last season. But ask coach Brett Dillion about expectations and he's quick to point out the attitude and expectations around the program have changed.

"Last year we were hoping to go .500," he said. "This year we expect .500 to be a worst-case scenario. We want to compete for an OCC title and with what we've seen, we think we can win our region. We feel very confident of that."

The coach is excited because he knows his program is so much further along than it was at this time a season ago.

End of Season Message from Ted Fuss...

Hi !!  Thank you for a wonderful season !!  Over the last four years you have always achieved higher but this year's improvement was definitely a quantum leap !!  As I reflect I am amazed at where we are today !!  I chose not to speak Friday (applause) so the focus remained on the athletes !!  I want to thank you for recognizing us with a Coaches gift - that was very thoughtful of the team !!

Our team of 28 will reduce to 23 with Saturday's Graduation.  Congratulations Seniors !!  Two of these men were on our first team in 2005 - they have alot of stories to tell about that experience !!  Kyle Tarbutton and Bobby Lane have been an integral part of this team from the beginning - we will miss you.  Jon Storms came a year later and joined a second year team still discovering how to play the game.  Jonathan's work ethic was highlighted by his Bill Withrow Award at the banquet.  We only had a year with Matt Donelson and Alex Wade - I would like a few more myself - they had a great year and very impressive development as first year players.  Seniors - as you move on to future endeavors we wish you the very best !!

If all High School players return and all twelve Middle School athletes move up we are sitting at 35 athletes for the 2009 season !!  The Middle School athletes include 3 five year, 1 four year, 1 three year and 4 two year athletes.  34 is the magic number for adding a jv team next year.  Conversations indicate the number of athletes may be much higher.  We won't worry until we have 60 !!

Coach Dillon's plan is to run fall ball like last year - 2 or 3 days a week - a couple drills and scrimmage.  This will start at the end of August after school starts and run through Halloween - every athlete involved with this had a great time.  We plan to take a varsity and jv team to the Fourth Annual Ohio State Halloween 7v7 Tournament at the end of October as we did last year.  Next is the 16 week winter indoor league at All Star Sports - once again the plan is for a varsity and jv team.  This runs from the beginning of November to mid-February.   This takes you right up to the start of our 2009 campaign.  We will send info on these programs as soon as they become available.

We will be looking for a field for fall ball and would like to use this field over the summer for those who would like to arrange informal shoot arounds !!

The program : There has been alot of discussion of how we move forward as a recognized Varsity sport at the High School.  We have had alot of in-house discussion over the last five days and are ready to move forward with a meeting with Athletic Director Justin Sanford.  We will keep you advised as we learn the details for next year.  Coach Dillon, Coach Richardson, VP Ed Smallwood and I will attend the meeting.

A very special thanks to our coaches !!  Nice job !!!!

Parents - thanks for your support.  This program does not run unless you are there.  We had alot of fun this year.  You will see emails in the near future where we will try to establish all board committees.  We have the framework in place and plan to make our board fully operational.  Thanks to all the volunteers that made this year happen !!

Have a geat summer.  Enjoy lacrosse camps and vacations.  Keep your sticks in your hands !!

Thanks again for the great season.  Go Lions !!

See you soon !!
